REFUGE TeaserREFUGE is an interactive documentary which tells the story of modern-day refugee resettlement through the lens of Utica, a shrinking Rust Belt city in upstate New York. The multi-year collaborative storytelling project paints a complex and character-driven portrait of the refugee experience, combining archival imagery, cinematic narratives, participatory storytelling and a mobile audio tour to immerse users in a rich digital landscape and location-based experience.Behind the shuttered textile mills and boarded-up houses of this faded upstate town, REFUGE reveals the voices and stories of individuals displaced from Vietnam, Bosnia, Bhutan, Iraq and Burma as they seek to redefine the meaning of home in Utica. The project is a living chronicle of resettlement in the United States, unveiling an ongoing yet under-reported narrative of the transformation and hardship that is defining and impacting resettlement communities across the country.
